Internship Module 2 Journal Entry

·        What is your internship? Describe it as if you had an elevator ride to do it in.

My internship with C4 Database Management will consist mainly of learning as much as I can from Todd Stabelfeldt, the founder and CEO. C4 Database Management provides LIS (Laboratory Information Systems) Services as well as Database Services for several Healthcare organization across the US. C4 Database Management’s main clientele include healthcare laboratories and a few dental practices.

My duties include managing and organizing all DBA and LIS alerts and reports that are automatically generated and sent to a specific email account. I will also be working with other C4 IT team members to learn how to manage a SQL Server operating within a healthcare industry environment. 

·        What do you know about it?

I will be getting hands on experience with working with SQL Servers and how they operate in a healthcare industry. Prior to this internship I have only had classroom experience with SQL queries, and Windows Servers that were not specifically SQL servers.

·        What will you need to learn to accomplish it?

I will be working with various C4 IT team members that will demonstrate operations and functions on the SQL Server.  My learning lessons will include various uses of databases, database tables, stored procedures, SQL, jobs, and SQL operators, among various other DBA responsibilities.

I will also be learning more about HL7 (Health Level 7) which according to Wikipedia, “refer to international standards for transfer of clinical and administrative data between software applications used by various healthcare providers.” C4 follows the HL7 standards when deploying EMR (electronic medical records) between a laboratory to a doctor’s clinic.

·        How does it represent your BASIS learning and IT skills?

This internship will help strengthen my skills and knowledge with server management and database administration management. Through the internship I will also learn how to tailor operations and procedures so that it would adhere to industry standards as required by law.
