Module 10 Journal Entry

Evaluate the success of your internship. Reflect on what was most effective and what was most challenging.     Since my internship is going to continue through the spring semester, I would not classify it as a “success” but rather still a “work in progress.”   I am extremely grateful to be able to continue on with C4 and get more opportunities to expand my knowledge.   I have gained significantly more knowledge about IT in Healthcare as my weeks progressed during the winter quarter.   It helps that Todd is a charismatic individual who strives to include me whenever it is possible so that I can get the most out of learning about his business. His willingness and enthusiasm towards including me is very much appreciated.   What has been effective is his flexibility to work around my schedule.   We might not get to have daily sessions, between his own personal work duties and my schedule, but we make it work to get at least 2 sessions a week together.   Now that I am going over t

What is the one thing you would strive to improve upon? One of my character faults is not being able to step away from controlling/leading out of habit when I am not sure of the power dynamics in the situation I am in.   For example, when I am doing sessions with Todd, I know to take his lead and follow in his direction rather than taking the lead from him.   I know that he is my superior in knowledge and experience, so I am comfortable stepping back and taking his direction. On the other hand, during group work for classwork assignments, I have found myself to step into the leader role whether or not I was assigned out of habit.   I have found myself taking the initiative to set meeting dates with ample time for my group to complete the work.   During those meetings I usually have an agenda in mind with all my material prepared before the meeting time.   For the most part, I don’t think this has caused a conflict with my groupmates.   However, while my willingness to step into

Module 8 Journal Entry

Prompt: two weeks ago, your journal prompt laid out a professional networking strategy with some immediate tasks; discuss what progress have you made on them.   To be honest, I have not made much progress on my professional networking strategy.   My reasoning is that I am continuing with my internship position through the spring quarter.   I figure that I will have more opportunities to continue to add to my IT professional contacts list as I have more exposure through C4. I also plan on sending out resumes before the spring quarter ends to get a feel of what jobs are out there, as well as to see what employees are looking for.

What was your easiest accomplishment during this week's internship? What was your hardest accomplishment during this week's internship? The easiest accomplishment during this week's internship is getting the hang of the monitoring the Reports Inbox.   That is the main responsibility I have as an intern for Todd.   In this capacity I am also handling support tickets that go out to another company for when our servers go down since they are physically housed at a center in Tacoma. I wrote an SOP on the procedures for the Reports Inbox, so in that process I gained a better understanding as a side benefit. The hardest accomplishments during this week’s internship is figuring out where else I can be of value for the company.   The problem is that I still have only a surface level of understanding of what goes on with C4.   To borrow Todd’s favorite phrase: “I don’t know what I don’t know.” The other side of the problem is that Todd is still getting to know me and what my ski

What is your professional networking strategy? To be honest, I have not thought about my professional networking strategy, as I have been focused on what’s in front of me at the moment.   I went out to Indeed.com and looked at their suggestions from their “8 Effective Networking Strategies for Professionals” article (2021) . They list their strategies as: Join a networking group Utilize social media Grow a database of professional contacts Join industry groups Attend conventions and conferences Send emails Set up informational interviews Offer assistance I do not have networking groups on my radar, but I will ask for recommendations from Todd and others at C4. Luckily, I already have a LinkedIn profile going that I just need to update with my current internship position. I am building new networking contacts with the interactions I have with other IT professionals while I am currently in my internship capacity.   So, I would have to say that I am slowly building a database of pr

Journal Entry Topic: What was your biggest accomplishment during this week's internship? This week I created a draft of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document for the routine handling of the Reports Inbox.   Todd decided that creating this SOP document was a good idea so that I not only have a guideline to follow, but also to documents procedures for the next intern or whoever that follows.   I created the first draft of the document on my own time and presented it to Todd and his business partner Emily Friday afternoon.   By creating the document, I became more familiar with the nuances of what should look right and what discrepancies I should be looking for.   During our Friday session I was able to notice a discrepancy with one of the servers not submitting summary reports as expected.   Todd was of course already aware of the issue and let me know that the particular server in question was rebooted that afternoon.   That server’s hiccup in service created a cascadi

Module 4: Internship journey

Write a journal entry that addresses how you plan to implement or have implemented the internship. During the Fall quarter, the night internships were brought up I was not present in the lab since I had stayed home due to a cold.   I had missed the important speaking parts of the internship discussion, and also missed the opportunity to ask questions as I normally would have done.   However, since Stephen Foster was present during that night, I asked him about it the next day while we were waiting for others to join the class. He mentioned that he knew of an internship opportunity with Todd Stablefeldt and would initiate contact with him.   Thanks to Stephen I was able to connect with Todd to set up a Zoom session/interview with him.   During our initial Zoom session, Todd shared his company’s story and his personal journey of how his company C4 Database Management came to be.   I was really impressed with his story of how he got to where he is, and figured that I could learn so mu
